The story
The Rione Terra is the original core of Pozzuoli: a tuff promontory inhabited from the second century BC, from which the gulf was controlled. In 1970 the whole district was evacuated because of the bradyseism crisis, and for decades it stood empty. But beneath its houses an intact Roman city was hidden: the recovery works have brought it back to light, and today the Rione is living a new cultural season.
What to see
The heart of the visit is the underground archaeological route: a whole stretch of Roman Puteoli — paved streets, workshops, storehouses — preserved beneath the district. On the surface, the recovered Rione, with the Duomo that incorporates the ancient Roman temple of Augustus, tells of the long rebirth of the place.
