At the gateway to Benevento, the Rocca dei Rettori, once seat of the papal governors, watches over the city from its gardens, amid Lombard and Samnite memories.
The story
The Rocca dei Rettori is the castle of Benevento, at the highest point of the old centre. Its oldest core is the Torrione (keep), what remains of the Lombard fortress, later rebuilt to its fifteenth-century form; beside it rises the Palace of the Pontifical Governors — the 'rectors' who ruled Benevento in the centuries when the city was an enclave of the Papal States. Today it is the seat of the Province.
What to see
The complex joins the Lombard keep, twenty-eight metres high and recognisable by its ogival mullioned windows, and the palace of the pontifical rectors. In its walls one reads reused stones of Roman age. It houses the historical section of the Museo del Sannio, dedicated to the history and traditions of the city and the province.
