The story
The Aragonese Castle rises on an islet of volcanic rock off Ischia, connected to the island by a masonry bridge 220 metres long. Born from a 'bubble' of magma consolidated over three hundred thousand years ago, it was fortified from antiquity; in the mid-fifteenth century Alfonso V of Aragon had the long access tunnel dug into the rock that is still walked today.
What to see
A whole fortified town to explore: churches, courtyards, gardens and terraces up to the summit, at over a hundred metres above the sea, with a 360-degree panorama over the gulf. Among the most evocative places, the church of the Immacolata and the Convent of the Poor Clares with its 'cemetery'.
How to get there

Tips
You go up by lift or on foot along the tunnel; then the route is all climbs and steps: comfortable shoes. Half a day is needed to enjoy it. Check the ticket and hours on the official site. It is at Ischia Ponte, the most characteristic village of the island.
