The story
The Royal Palace of Naples, facing Piazza del Plebiscito, was built from 1600 and brought to its present appearance over the centuries, with architects such as Domenico Fontana and Luigi Vanvitelli. It was the residence of the Spanish and Austrian viceroys, then of the Bourbons and finally of the Savoys after Unification: four dynasties in a single palace.
What to see
The heart of the visit is the Royal Apartments, with the monumental staircase, the state rooms, the furnishings and the chapel. The palace also houses the National Library. On the façade towards the square, the statues of the kings of Naples sum up the history of the Kingdom in a single row.
Tips
It is on Piazza del Plebiscito, next to the Teatro San Carlo and the Galleria Umberto: in a few hundred metres you can string together the symbols of monumental Naples. Check hours and tickets for the Royal Apartments on the official site.
