Pietrelcina is a hill village above the river Tammaro, at the gates of Benevento, but its name is known throughout the world for one reason: here, in 1887, Francesco Forgione was born, the future Saint Pius of Pietrelcina — Padre Pio. The village, documented since the twelfth century and long a fief of various families until the abolition of feudalism, is today one of the most frequented pilgrimage destinations in the South.
