Nusco

The story

Called «the balcony of Irpinia», Nusco is among the highest municipalities of the province of Avellino, third after Trevico and Guardia Lombardi. It became a civitas and episcopal seat already in the eleventh century: the first bishop was Saint Amatus, a native of the place and still today the patron, whose relics are kept in the cathedral together with the Chartula Iudicati of 1093, written in Beneventan Lombard characters. In the Middle Ages its castle was a safe fortress, which gave shelter even to dukes and sovereigns in flight.

What to see

The name says it all: from the ramparts of the ruined castle and from the avenues that skirt the town the gaze ranges from the Vulture massif to the Terminio, from the Partenio to the Taburno as far as the Matese and the Monti Dauni. In the cathedral are kept the relics of Saint Amatus and the ancient Chartula Iudicati. Around it, the compact old centre of Upper Irpinia. Nusco is part of the circuit of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy.

Tips

We are at altitude, on the Apennine ridge: bring something warmer even in the mild season, and choose a clear day for the panorama, which is the very reason to climb up here. The car is the most practical means. An excellent base to explore the Upper Irpinia of lakes and forests.
