The story
Capodimonte was born as the royal palace of Charles of Bourbon, on the hill of the same name above Naples, to house the Farnese collection inherited from his mother. Today the palace is one of the largest museums in Italy, set in an enormous historic park, the Real Bosco (Royal Wood).
What to see
The picture gallery holds masterpieces of the Farnese collection and of the Neapolitan Gallery — from Titian to Caravaggio (the Flagellation) —, as well as a rare section of contemporary art, where Andy Warhol's 'Vesuvius' stands out. Outside, the Real Bosco is an immense park where Neapolitans come to walk.
Tips
The museum is large and on a hill: allow half a day, and make the most of the Real Bosco for a walk. Hours and tickets are on the museum's official site. It is reached by bus from the centre; the park is a breath of green air above the city.
