The story
The Gaetano Filangieri Civic Museum, in Palazzo Como on via Duomo, was born from the collecting passion of Prince Gaetano Filangieri of Satriano, who proposed it to the city in 1881 and opened it to the public in 1888. The fifteenth-century palace was moved about twenty metres to save it from the demolitions of the Risanamento (urban renewal). The collection lost many works in 1943, when the Germans set fire to the villa where they had been put in safety.

Over three thousand objects among arms and armour, porcelain, ivories, Neapolitan paintings and furnishings, set up in the historic rooms: the Carlo Filangieri Room, with the armour and the mosaic ceiling, and the Agata Room, with Neapolitan Baroque painting. An elegant and less crowded museum, in the heart of the centre.

The museum has its own entrance and hours: check days, hours and ticket on the official site. You are on via Duomo, a stone's throw from the Duomo and the Girolamini: it combines well with a walk among the decumani.
