The story

Monte Solaro, 589 metres, is the highest peak on Capri and towers over Anacapri. You go up by a single-seat chairlift that leaves from Piazza Vittoria and, in a dozen minutes suspended above vegetable plots and gardens, reaches the summit; alternatively you can walk up along ancient mountain paths. From the top the two gulfs open out, of Naples and of Salerno.

What to see

From the terrace at the top, a 360-degree panorama that on clear days reaches as far as the Apennines: the Faraglioni, the Sorrento peninsula, Vesuvius, the Amalfi coast. Just below the summit hide the hermitage of Santa Maria a Cetrella and the remains of the Fortino di Bruto, a small fort of the Napoleonic era. On the slopes live almost nine hundred plant species and the rare blue lizard.

How to get there

  • Hydrofoil
  • Ferry

Hours and prices

Free entry.

Tips

The chairlift charges a fare, with hours that grow shorter in winter: check the current runs before going up, and bear in mind that it is an open chairlift, suspended in mid-air. Those who prefer to walk can climb on foot along the Passetiello path or from Via Axel Munthe, but it is a route for hikers.
