The story
The Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto) is the most famous marine cavity of Capri, on the north-western coast of the island (Anacapri). Its incredible blue is born from the light that enters through an underwater opening and, filtering out the warm colours, lets only the blue pass. Already in Roman times it was a nymphaeum of the emperor Tiberius; in 1826 the poet August Kopisch 'rediscovered' it, launching its fame.
What to see
The interior of the grotto lit by that unreal blue light, with the silvery reflections beneath the boats: a unique natural spectacle that has enchanted travellers for centuries. Roman statues were found in the grotto, today at the Casa Rossa in Anacapri.

Tips
You enter only in small rowing boats, lying down to pass the opening barely two metres high: it depends entirely on the sea, and with waves or high tide the grotto closes without warning. Check the conditions before setting off and keep a plan B. You arrive by sea from Marina Grande or by land from Anacapri; entrance and boat are paid.
