On the high promontory sheer above the gulf, the Aragonese castle guards the statues resurfaced from the submerged Roman city of the Campi Flegrei.
The story
The Aragonese Castle of Baia, at Bacoli, dominates the Gulf of Pozzuoli from a panoramic promontory. Built at the end of the fifteenth century in defence of the coast, today it houses the Archaeological Museum of the Campi Flegrei, where the best of the finds of this volcanic and stratified land is gathered.
What to see
The reconstruction of the Shrine of the Augustales of Misenum, with the statues of the emperors Vespasian and Titus, the plaster casts of the Baths of Baia (copies of famous Greek sculptures) and the Nymphaeum of Punta Epitaffio, resurfaced from the sea where bradyseism had submerged it. From the castle, one of the most beautiful views over the Campi Flegrei.
