The story

In 1401 a deaf-mute shepherdess, Agnese Pepe, is said to have heard the Madonna's voice coming from a cave on the Taburno. On the spot of the miracle a convent grew at 544 metres, today a silent balcony over the Valle Caudina.

On the slopes of the Taburno, at 544 metres, above Bucciano, stands the sanctuary of Santa Maria a Monte Taburno, born between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries as a votive chapel for a statue of the Virgin held to be miraculous, later entrusted to a Dominican convent. Tradition links its origin to a legend of 1401: a deaf-mute girl from Moiano, Agnese Pepe, is said to have found the statue in a grotto and regained her speech.

The sanctuary, immersed in the greenery of the Taburno, has for centuries been the goal of pilgrimages and Marian devotion. You also go up for the panoramic position on the slopes of the massif. For the people of Bucciano it is a tradition to go up on the Sunday after Easter.
