The story

The sanctuary of Saint Philomena is the mother church of Mugnano del Cardinale, at the foot of the Partenio. Built between 1580 and 1600, since 1805 it has kept the body of Saint Philomena, brought here by the priest Don Francesco De Lucia: the relics had been found in 1802 in the catacombs of Priscilla in Rome, together with an inscription — LUMENA PAX TECVM FI — and the symbols of the lily, the palm and the anchor. In 1961 the Congregation of Rites removed the name of Philomena from the liturgical calendars, for the uncertainty of the historical sources on her figure; the devotion was not however prohibited, and the sanctuary of Mugnano remains active and a place of pilgrimage for over two centuries. It is one of the nine sanctuaries of the diocese of Nola.

What to see

The sanctuary keeps the body of the saint in a statue-reliquary and has for generations been one of the most frequented places of devotion of the area. The mother church of Mugnano del Cardinale, between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, was shaped around this cult.
