The story
Castel Sant'Elmo is the great medieval fortress that dominates Naples from the top of the Vomero hill, next to the Charterhouse of San Martino. Born from a Norman watchtower, it was enlarged to its imposing star-shaped plan, partly carved into the yellow Neapolitan tuff, which makes it the most extensive castle in the city.
What to see
The reason to go up is the panorama: from the 250 metres of its position you take in the whole city, the gulf and the hills. The castle houses the museum 'Napoli Novecento' and temporary exhibitions, but its terrace is already the spectacle in itself.

Go up to the Vomero by funicular and combine Castel Sant'Elmo with the Charterhouse of San Martino, which is beside it. The terrace offers perhaps the most complete view of Naples: ideal on clear days. Check hours and admission on the official site before going up.
