The story
The Castel dell'Ovo (Egg Castle) is the oldest castle in Naples, built on the islet of Megaride — where the first Greek core of the city arose. Its name comes from an ancient legend: the poet Virgil is said to have hidden there a magic egg capable of holding up the whole fortress; its breaking would have brought ruin to Naples.
What to see
The castle, jutting out over the sea between via Partenope and Borgo Marinari, offers from its terraces one of the most celebrated panoramas of the gulf, from Vesuvius to Capri. At its foot, the small Borgo Marinari with its harbour and restaurants is one of the most photographed corners of the city.
