In a plain at the foot of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, the abbey of the Goleto was founded in 1133 by Saint William of Vercelli, the same founder of Montevergine. It was born as a female monastery — with a small male convent to oversee its management — and became rich and powerful under a series of abbesses, from Febronia to the two Marinas. After the decline that began with the plague of 1348, it was suppressed in 1515 and united with Montevergine; it knew a rebirth between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with the church designed by Domenico Antonio Vaccaro.

The complex, partly reduced to evocative ruins, tells of centuries of monastic history: the medieval structures of the double monastery and the eighteenth-century church of Domenico Antonio Vaccaro, one of the great architects of Neapolitan Baroque. A place of great charm and contemplation in Upper Irpinia.
