The story
The Valle delle Ferriere, in the municipality of Scala above Amalfi, is a state nature reserve that takes its name from the ancient ironworks (ferriere) of the Republic of Amalfi, where nails for ships were made. It is a corner of lush, humid nature, famous for a botanical rarity: the Woodwardia radicans, a relict tree fern dating back to the Cenozoic era.
What to see
A valley of waterfalls, giant ferns and luxuriant, almost tropical vegetation, among the ruins of the ancient ironworks and paper mills. The contrast with the arid coast a short distance away is surprising: it is the secret, green Coast, for those who love to walk in nature.
